Two things are at stake: how you handle the child and how onlookers perceive your handling of the child. Stay cool (a steely calm is good); nobody wants to see two red-faced screamers. If it's a kid-friendly place (zoo, playground), relax in the know-ledge that the other parents know it's not your fault. But in an adult setting (bistro, grocery), take action. If your charm fails, quickly move the drama out of the main arena. You'll limit your embarrassment and quell the ire of the adults around you.
