You waste a charm op if you arrive at a party and hand the hosts some generic bottle of red wine. Let's kill this tiresome routine. Remember, the secret of charm is noticing people's particularities. Did they travel in Australia last year? Bring a six-pack of some Down Under brew. Are they gardeners? A packet of seeds taped to an ordinary bottle of wine transforms it from ho-hum to high-spirited. Don't make a big deal about this, especially if the party's cooking. Tape a note to the gift, just a folded 3x5 card will do, with a few buoyant words tipping your hat to their enthusiasm. Hours later, as they're cleaning up after the party, they'll read the note, and wham! You're charming long after you've gone.
