The old adage "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" means if it's free, don't bitch. Upon receiving a turd, the charming man knows how to turn shock ("the horror!") into surprise ("oh!") to fill the awkward silence that might otherwise settle in. Don't lie ("I love it!"). Instead, offer a vague response that can pass as appreciation ("This is really something"). Handle it respectfully and take a cue from the object to change the subject: "This refrigerator magnet reminds me - who needs another beer?"
